FRIDAY NIGHT LECTURE: BEING A PAINTER IN THE DIGITAL AGE

LOCATION: COMPASS ATELIER 2 (12276 Wilkins Ave)

This internationally collected artist delivers a new lecture on his work, artistic journey, and what it means to make art in the modern age. Duane Keiser is the innovator behind the 'A Painting A Day' phenomenon, where artwork produced on the easel is immediately offered (and in his case promptly sold) on eBay in their auction setting. This process has garnered him press from USA Today, The New York Times, and The Huffington Post and earned him an international reputation. Dinner, wine, and soft drinks are included, and there will be time to meet the artist.

WEEKEND WORKSHOP: THE PREMIER COUP

LOCATION: COMPASS ATELIER 2 (12276 Wilkins Ave)

Through painting sessions, demos, and critiques, Duane Keiser will lead a challenging 2-day workshop on premier coup painting. Premier coup, or "first strike," is a painting done with the intent of finishing it in one sitting. Like Jazz, premier coup can be wonderfully improvisational while also requiring a high degree of precision and control. Duane will share his various strategies, techniques, and ways of thinking about painterly exploration of a subject within the confines of a moment.

FRESH APPROACH TO SEEING

In this 2-day workshop, internationally renowned artist Wendy Artin will lead students through her elegant approach to observational painting. Your time with the figure will focus on techniques for making fast and fluid images, with poses that range from 30 seconds to a half-hour.  Then you will examine the finer details of nature, form, light and color in fresh local produce to paint simple essential colorful still lifes. Individual instruction will be given to each student. Valuable lessons from brush control to wetness and use of the paper will assist artists for whom watercolor is new or familiar.  All levels from complete beginners to professionals welcome.
