Halprin talk.jpg

INSTRUCTOR: DEBRA HALPRIN

We hope you will join us, when our guest speaker will be award-winning artist Debra Halprin, an expert in the fine art of giclée printing.

Pronounced "zhee-clay," giclée produces an archival, high-quality inkjet reproduction that is fade resistant and waterproof. Prints are made on such archival substrates as cotton rag paper and canvas.

Discover what the process entails, the questions to consider when having your artwork reproduced, the various ways to market your giclée prints and various methods of enhancing your reproductions in order to make them unique in their own right. Debra will also review how to photograph your artwork if you choose to shoot your paintings on your own.

A complimentary glass of wine and light fare is included.

BUSINESS OF BEING AN ARTIST WORKSHOP • GLEN KESSLER • MON, MAR 11 • 3-6PM

Practices header 1.jpg

INSTRUCTOR: GLEN KESSLER

Being an artist is actually like running a business. Every artist has the production side of things down. But if all you had at your business was a production house and no CEO, CFO, CTO, PR department, or sales team, then you'd end up with what most artists have resigned themselves to...a warehouse full of unsold goods! This workshop shines a light on simple steps you can take to develop your 'entire business' and be successful as an artist.

CINDY PROCIOUS: CONTEMPORARY STILL LIFE PAINTING • MONDAY - SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18-23 • 10AM-5PM

WEEKLONG WORKSHOP: CONTEMPORARY STILL LIFE PAINTING

Contemporary Still Life Painting is a week-long course focused on realist painting using methods of the Old Masters. It is open to anyone who paints in oil, from beginner to advanced.

Students will learn a layered indirect painting technique, incorporating underpainting, layering and glazing. We will explore a variety of techniques for realistically creating the illusion of different surface textures, as well as how to achieve rich color and depth of form to create a luminous work of art with a high level of finish. We will also learn how to use Photoshop as a tool to create more successful paintings.

Emphasis will be placed on design, composition, and lighting to create a dramatic still life set up.  Working from direct observation, we will cover the basic elements of painting in oil - from the initial drawing on canvas, to color, value, edge control, glazing/scumbling, and final varnishing.

Students will create their own complete narrative scene incorporating food and drink of their choice. Through demonstration and individual instruction in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, students will be guided through the entire process from the first drawing on the canvas to the finishing flourishes.

Session #4: Tuesday, March 27, 2018 ~ Tax Strategies

WALA Creative Entrepreneur Series @ The Compass Atelier 2
(Legal Issues for Creative Entrepreneurs)

Presentation and Q & A with:
Benjamin Grosz and Benjamin Takis

"Pursuing your art as a business can be daunting, and one of the biggest challenges is understanding the tax laws. Between the many types of federal and state taxes that apply to your business, it is easy to make a mistake that can set back your business for years."

"Benjamin Takis and Benjamin Grosz, both having active experience in the arts in addition to practicing as tax attorneys, will provide an overview of the federal income tax, a guide to the different business structures you should consider, as well as more advanced federal tax issues relevant to artists in the Washington, DC area."

Benjamin Takis is the founding attorney of Tax-Exempt Solutions PLLC, a law firm specializing in tax, corporate governance, employment issues and business transactions for non-profit organizations and social entrepreneurs." Since beginning his practice in 2006, Ben has devoted his career to representing non-profit organizations and tax-exempt entities. Ben honed his skills as an associate at the premier Washington D.C. labor firm Bredhoff & Kaiser and the leading employee benefits boutique Groom Law Group. At Bredhoff and Groom, Ben represented some of the largest pension funds, health care trusts, and labor organizations in the country, along with public charities, lobbying groups, trade associations, and other non-profit organizations of all types and sizes.

Benjamin Grosz is an associate with Ivins, Phillips & Barker, where he advises clients on a broad range of federal income, estate and gift tax planning matters, as well as employee benefits issues. Before law school, Ben started his own financial planning business. Prior to that he was a business manager at Capital One Financial Corporation, where he developed strategy and analysis for its credit card and banking businesses. His experiences in starting his own financial planning business and developing business strategy for Capital One help him understand the needs of clients ranging from entrepreneurs to large corporations. Although lacking the talent to be a professional artist, Ben spent years singing with various choirs and has had the privilege to sing at the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap, and the good fortune to participate in a singing “tour de France” with one of his college choirs.
