HEAD & FACE WORKSHOP with ROBERTO OSTI

The head and face are probably the most rewarding parts of the human figure for an artist to draw or paint. Head and face can also be an intimidating subject because of its inherent complexities. This intensive online workshop of the duration of two weekends, is designed to give students interested in portraiture a sound understanding of the structure, anatomy and physiognomy of the head and is organized on a systematic methodology that will give the students access to the knowledge and technique necessary to master and enjoy drawing this challenging yet satisfying subject.

The workshop is distributed across two weekends. During the first two classes of the duration of 6 hours each and held online with live video demonstrations, we will discuss the structure and planes of the head along with its anatomy and facial features and their proper position in the face.

During the third and fourth meetings, also of the duration of 6 hours each, the physiognomic characteristics of the face and the facial expressions will be discussed. During these demonstrations, I will also discuss the fundamental elements of structural drawing and tonal rendering using two essential techniques: graphite on white paper, charcoal and chalk on toned paper and trois crayon technique.

The Zoom live videos permit the students to have a very clear view at all times of my demonstrations giving me the possibility to also discuss technical aspects of drawing. The students will draw along with me for the whole duration of the live demonstrations creating many drawings and practicing both the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject. The recorded Zoom sessions will be available to the students for the duration of two weeks after the end of the workshop.

The students will also be assigned a few exercises to prepare during the week between the first and second workshop, preparing a realistic and a flayed self portrait. I will give feedback, critiques and advise to the students on the works they prepared during the workshop.

Option just added to attend one weekend or another, though both is recommended.
