The Compass Atelier: Our Story & Mission

The Compass Atelier was founded on a simple but powerful belief: great art is not born from talent alone, but from the combination of knowledge, practice, passion, and perseverance. Our mission is to provide artists of all backgrounds and experience levels with the tools, guidance, and community they need to reach their fullest creative potential.

Founded by artist and educator Glen Kessler, The Compass Atelier was inspired by the great teaching traditions of the European ateliers, where aspiring artists learned their craft through rigorous observation, technical training, and close mentorship with accomplished working artists. These time-honored methods, which helped shape generations of master painters, remain at the heart of our educational philosophy.

But while our roots are firmly planted in tradition, our vision is decidedly contemporary. We believe that mastering the fundamentals of drawing, painting, color, composition, and design is not an end in itself, but a means to something greater: the development of each artist's unique creative voice. Technique provides the foundation; individuality gives the work its meaning.

At The Compass Atelier, we reject the notion that artistic excellence is reserved for a gifted few. We believe that anyone willing to dedicate themselves to learning can achieve extraordinary growth. Whether a student is picking up a paintbrush for the first time, returning to art after decades away, or pursuing a professional career, we offer a welcoming yet challenging environment in which to flourish.

Our programs range from individual classes and workshops to our comprehensive three-year Master Artist Program, offering students the opportunity to pursue their artistic development at whatever level of commitment suits their goals. Throughout, our emphasis remains on exceptional instruction, thoughtful mentorship, and the belief that learning to see is just as important as learning to paint.

Equally important is the community we build. Artmaking can be a solitary pursuit, but artistic growth thrives in an atmosphere of shared curiosity, encouragement, and inspiration. We strive to create a place where artists learn not only from their instructors, but from one another, forming friendships and creative connections that extend far beyond the classroom.

Our mission is to honor the traditions of the past, embrace the possibilities of the present, and empower the artists of the future.

At The Compass Atelier, we don't simply teach people how to paint. We help them discover what they are capable of creating.
